June 2nd is National Greyhound Day! If you’re considering adopting a new pooch, you may want to consider a Greyhound. These fast, agile pups may be known for racing, but they also make wonderful, affectionate pets. Read on as a local Bellevue, WA vet lists a few of Fido’s best qualities.
Small-Space Friendly
Greyhounds may be fast, but they are actually less zoomy than many people think. There’s a reason the Greyhound is referred to as the ‘40mph couch potato’! Fido will need a few good walks each day. However, once he’s had his doggy workout, your furry friend will probably spend the majority of his time napping.
Quiet Pets
Just like people, some dogs are louder than others. Greyhounds tend to be on the quieter end of the scale when it comes to vocalization. That’s a big plus for many!
Clean
Another great thing about Greyhounds? They are quite clean, and don’t need much by way of grooming. Brushing Fido regularly and bathing him on occasion should be all you need as far as coat care. Of course, your four-legged friend will also need pawdicures and dental care. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Cuddly
One of the best things about Fido is the fact that he is so lovable and affectionate. Many Greyhounds are quite the little cuddle bugs!
Perfect Play Cycles
What happens when Fido does feel playful? He’ll probably run around joyously for a few minutes, and then quickly run out of gas. That’s just about perfect for many people!
Napping Buddies
Because Greyhounds have such thin fur, they are quite susceptible to cold temperatures. When it’s cold out, Fido will want to snuggle up with you, or burrow under his favorite blanket. We probably don’t have to tell you how adorable this is!
Intelligence
Greyhounds are extremely intelligent. In fact, these guys can make wonderful service dogs! One exceptional pooch was even the subject of a book. You can read his story in Comet’s Tale: How the Dog I Rescued Saved My Life.
Sweet Souls
Although all of our canine pals have their own unique personalities, Greyhounds are often very sweet. That placid, gentle demeanor is evident as soon as you look into their eyes, which can be a heart melting experience.
